“Great job today, guys! Everyone was really in sync with their lions!”

Shiro was proud of how far they’d come as a team. Today had been the first time in a good while they’d had enough time to officially train, and he couldn’t believe how much everyone had improved in just a few months together.

One among them had done especially well that day.

“Hey, Lance,” Shiro called, catching his teammate before he could run off to his room. Lance halted at the sound of his voice and turned to face him.

“What’s up, boss?”

“I just wanted to let you know I was very impressed with your flying out there today.”

It wasn’t that Lance had been a terrible pilot when they first met (though Keith would argue otherwise). He’d certainly had a better grasp on flying than either Hunk or Pidge, who’d had no piloting experience prior to joining Voltron. He’d just been a little too unfocused and impatient with his flying before. He seemed to have gotten a handle on those things over the course of the past several months, and Shiro thought the change merited praise.

Lance didn’t respond to his compliment the way Shiro expected. Instead of shooting him a smug grin and proclaiming he knew just how awesome he was, he just blushed and tucked his chin.

“Oh. Heh. Thanks, Shiro.”

“I’m serious. Keep up the good work, Sharpshooter.”

Shiro was the only one who actually used Lance’s nickname. After all, he’d been the one to coin it…even if Lance claimed he’d given it to himself. He liked the way Lance seemed to perk up whenever he called him that, preening under his attention.

That day, however, Lance wasn’t behaving as he usually did.

“I um…didn’t think I did anything that special today, honestly,” Lance said, rubbing at the back of his head self-consciously before he looked up at Shiro. “You though…you were really amazing out there. I mean, you’re always amazing but…wow. Getting to see you fly without a bunch of dudes trying to kill us for once…”

He trailed off and dropped his gaze to the floor again.

“I’ve got a few years on you, Lance. You’ll get there someday. Probably a lot sooner than I did at the rate you’re going.”

“Nah man, I don’t think anybody could ever be on your level. Everybody thinks Keith’s so great, and like, he’s ok I guess…but nobody flies like you. Nobody else is so crazy in-tune with themselves when they’re blasting through space. I mean, watching you pilot Black… you’re just…yeah.”

Lance clamped his mouth shut and scuffed his foot against the floor. It wasn’t like the blue paladin to be at a loss for words, and his atypical behavior concerned Shiro somewhat. He seemed to have regressed back into the feelings of insecurity he’d expressed a while back, despite his vast improvements as a pilot and member of the team.

“Lance,” Shiro said, placing a hand on Lance’s shoulder. “You shouldn’t compare yourself to me or anyone else. You’re doing great.”

“Wha–oh, no! No, no, no, I wasn’t–” Lance looked up at him with an embarrassed expression. “I uh, didn’t mean it like that. I was just…returning the compliment.”

“Oh. Well…thank you, Lance, but you didn’t need to do that.”

“Yeah. Yeah I know.” Lance chewed at his bottom lip. “Just feel like you need to hear that stuff sometimes too.”

Shiro moved his hand from Lance’s shoulder to his head, letting it linger there a fraction of a second before he ruffled his hair and then drew back. Lance finally cast him a small smile as he moved to smooth down his tousled hair.

“Get some rest, all right?” Shiro said.

He watched Lance as he left, not looking away until the door shut behind him.

“Ugh,” came Pidge’s voice at his back. “I don’t know which one of you is more painful to watch.”
